Here you are! Ready to start learning French.

Whether you need to acquire the basics for a trip to Paris, finish your degree and need to take this French 101 course, or simply do it for your pleasure; getting into learning French may be intimidating!

Learning and remembering new words, understanding grammar rules, trying to speak and understand (you probably won't for some time!)... may seem impossible.

There is no secret, it will take some efforts from your part; but the whole learning process can be fun! And overall it is TOTALLY POSSIBLE FOR ANYONE to acquire basic knowledge of the language and to progress.

The best way to start learning any new language is a combination of acquiring learning materials (textbooks/tapes/practice manuals...) and dedicatly reading and learning through; attending a class and participating and doing assignments; getting help from a tutor; and NEVER being discouraged, and KEEP wanting to learn.

TIP: To progress and learn better, always try to immerse yourself in the French language and culture through readings, listening French (radio programs online are a great way!). NEVER be discouraged if you do not understand everything or make mistakes, more you practice, easier you will learn and understand.

Keep trying and get help from all the resources available. If you do not understand everything, you will at least learn a little. While learning a little each time, you will end up learning a lot!

How many French speakers?

As of 1999, French was the 11th most common first language in the world, with 77 million first language speakers and another 51 million second language speakers, according to the Ethnologue Report.

For the same year, Rapport sur l'état de la Francophonie dans le monde offers more detailed figures:

113 million Francophones - Speak French (as a native or adopted language) fluently and use it on a regular basis.
61 million "occasional" Francophones - Live in a francophone country but do not speak French regularly, due to limited knowledge.
100-110 million students of all ages - Do not live in a francophone country, but have learned/are learning French in order to communicate with Francophones.
French is the second most commonly-taught second language in the world (after English).

Where is French spoken?

French and English are the only languages spoken as a native language on 5 continents.

So you have had French in high school or college... but that is many years ago and you have never spoken French since!! Your French is badly rusty BUT you still know what you learnt. You just need to get it back and keep practicing to maintain your knowledge and progress.

You can start by reviewing your old notes, acquiring a review manual/tapes and immerse yourself again into the language. Very soon, vocabulary will come back, your ears will get used to the sounds and all the tricky grammar rules will make more sense.

A trip to a Francophone region of the world would also help you getting confident. You will realize you know more French than what you want to believe. Being confident is an important step for advancing to a fluent level.

Your challenge is then to keep acquiring knowledge and to ease your communication in French.

Being able to practice with a French native tutor is very helpful and gives you the additional support you need to keep your French alive and to keep progressing.

Un petit recueil interressant pour essayer de comprendre les français - (vus par des canadiens).

Je pense que leur étude présente des observations interressantes et assez justes. Un autre ouvrage sur la sociéte française qui essaie de démystifier les descendants des Gaullois.!! [L'autre ouvrage en question est "French or Foe" by Polly Platt]

En tout cas un reportage interressant à écouter - ne serait-ce que pour la pratique de l'écoute du français avec différents accents et expressions.
